When I was a child I was enamored of an elderly gentleman that lived a short distance from our home. He and his wife were super nice. It was easy to know when he was on the air because whether he was broadcasting in code or by voice we could set around the kitchen table and listen to each dit, each dot (that is if your ears were fast enough...he could really smoke that key) and each word over mom's old "deep well" (don't know what I'm talking about, do you?) stove.
To a youngster his signal communications setup was the equivalent of the blue tooth systems of today with VOIP, remote helpdesks, outsourced "it" services, repairing computers over the internet and video links, and I wanted a part of it.

To make a long story short, he finally sent me home telling me he couldn't help me, I was apparently tone deaf. The time eventually came when I volunteered to serve in the U.S. Army. His Morse Code was most confusing to me and still is. But, today there are new codes bombarding not only a hand full of licensed operators but senior citizens and baby boomers with access to computers and the internet. It is my experience that these new users of world wide communications are just as confused by today's shorthand as I was by the old man's mysterious code back then.
P2P, B2B, BFF, C2C, D2D, E2E, POS ?!?! What does it all mean? A hint, POS is not point of sell! Fortunately, unlike the hum of the telegraph, we can master these new interlopers into our lives even if we are tone deaf. The big problem according to my experience is that people get frustrated as soon as they see these new terms. Their first reaction is I'm old and I can never learn this. They think the technological world has passed them by.
The problem facing techs is to get these poor souls to slow down, take a deep breath, and relax. Just like grandpa had to get rid of the mason jars buried in the back yard (still don't know what I'm talking about, do you?) and start using a bank and like the telephone became the necessity of the 20th century, the always savvy business world has made the computer the necessary evil of the early 21st century. The answer is not in fussing at them, cursing them under your breath, degrading them, or taking unfair advantage of them. It is to mentor them. I guess it helps to know you were in their shoes in another time and place.
